Is It Better to Replace Or Clean an Air Filter?

that filter is designed to be reused, keep our land fills a little less full and just recharge it. if that filter is nasty, it is just time to recharge.

Check all the vac lines and vac hoses, be sure that the belts are the proper tension, clean the battery,starter,alternator, engine block ground, all the grounds, clean the throttle body, check fuel pressure, change fuel filter, check air filter. Sounds like you are getting what we call a soft code , that's when the engine light comes on but goes off later, a hard code causes the engine light to stay on daily.Even a soft code will leave an error code stored in the main comp and also it will have info that tells more to the mechanic about what exactly had occurred to cause the code.So really a basic scanner should pick up the stored code and a proper diagnostic scanner will pick up the code and recover the error data info.If no code is found by either device I would say the vehicle looses it's power due to an electrical fault such as corrosion or rusty connections as I've mentioned in the charging system etc. Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way check the EGR valve circuit see if you've a device that has small vac hoses and a plug in wire connector.I do not recall if your vehicle has this Transducer but if it does it can cause the problems you are talking about and there are cheaper replacement parts then the dealership for that part.A lot of the times the dealership sells the EGR valve and transducer together for up to 500 bucks or more and the parts stores may sell it for much much cheaper or try a U pull wrecking yard. Remember most electrical problems are caused by bad grounds , also the EGR valve could be sticking or faulty on it , sometimes you can recondition them and also check your exhaust system especially if the car has lost power bec a clogged cat converter will cause such problems too.

2. What is better---fresh air from outside or regular room air with an air filter on?

I know I heard something about the air filters with ionizers not working as well as they claim, so I would say the fresh air is better. Just the fact that you get the stuffed up nose and headaches really should tell you which is better. Some cities have a lot of smog and bad air quality, but it is probably still better than using the air filters.

Air Filters arent that expensive. Plus you would be resticting more airflow to your engine wich would reduce your gas milage. With gas prices the way they are now, I think I would take gas milage over a 10-20 dollar air filter

Last year my car kept over heating in winter because there was very little antifreeze in the water and it had frozen. It also overheated in summer because the fan was blocked with grit and would not work

The filters may be at the return air vents themselves rather than at the evaporator coils. At least that's how it is with my house. Keeps the air ducts clean
