I Just Want to See the Light:

The story of neon signs neon sing neon signExperiencing the nightlife of Hong Kong is being intoxicated with the artificial light ocean. As a psychedelic night megapolis, Hong Kong has been followed by plentiful young people to explore the nightlife for a long period, and thus emerging a unique Cantonese style night culture. And one of the most considerable elements in constructing Hong Kong night scenery is neon sign. Vivid shining neon signs flash everywhere on Hong Kong streets, no matter where in crowded drugstores, tiny local restaurant, luxuriant shopping mall or exotic bar, neon signs could dominate all of night signals.Neon signs exist in a conceptual presentation. Since the first neon lamp is invented by Georges Claude (circa 1092), it has been convey human beings perceptions until nowadays. Neon signs as the artificial light do not only for functional illumination, but also show in an artistic and technological way. Darkness is changed by neon lights dramatically, meanwhile, darkness is the hardness puzzle ever for human being, it also urge people to question how ones body is in relation to that which surroundings, challenging ones sense of physical existence and boundary (Nina, 2011).Form a historically cultural point of view, as a result of the cultural combination that is western and eastern, Cantonese and North Chinese, Hong Kong seems a multiple clashing boom. Discovering a position that can balance where Hong Kong people will stand is extremely essential. Due to Hong Kong is a super fast-paced and crowded city, walking on a narrow street in the city, enormous neon signs hang over the buildings. On the commercial aspect, neon signs attract peoples attentions successfully. Exploring the commercial meaning of neon signs seem to be monotonous, but regarding neon signs as the mark of successfully economic development is reasonable. From New York to London, Shanghai to Hong Kong, and more developing cities, if you walk on the centre commercial area, neon signs light exist everywhere. During the process of developing of Hong Kong, neon signs become the evidence of generation alteration. However, Neon signs in Hong Kong are reducing gradually, due to environmental friendly and sustainable development, substituting LED light for neon signs is increasingly popular.Neon signs also apply in literary and art area, artist and designer utilise neon sign as the symbolic language to express emotion. In the movies and drama, neon signs are a landmark visual language, which represent Hong Kong poetic. From the movie In The Mood For Love (2000) and ChunKing Express (1994), which all directed by famous director Kar Wai Wang who has the blazing personal creating style that almost rendering a epoch-making Hong Kong look. Vivid contrasting colors sense, vintage style old fashion and traditional implied Chinese culture, all of these, director Kar Wai Wang approaching his unique artistic perspective through environment, music, scene, acting to display punctilious. More specific, neon signs play an essential role for adding atmospheres, many famous shots in movies becomes a name card of Hong Kong night. Not only in Hong Kong movies, the American movie The World Of Suzie Wong (Richard, 1960) shows a flourishing neon sign night view, to boost Hong Kong into worldwide eyes. The bright period of Hong Kong Neon Signs is 1950s to1970s, the neon signs sing economic prosperity, at the same time, it also communicates that huge lust and empty inside of people.Psychologically, explaining this phenomenon in an unusual aspect. The reason why neon signs is going to extinct in humanism theory, would that be maybe Hong Kong people is exploring a new expression instead of inside lust and empty? Researching neon signs here seems like appreciating the Hong Kong human history, from old to new, boom to calm, traditional to technological. The group activities are more transfer to individualism nowadays. Take an example, Jackie interviewee) who lives in Hong Kong forty years that experiences all the changing of neon signs and development of city, he said that over these thirty years neon signs changed a lot, at the meantime, Hong Kong pub culture is changing as well, it seems that Hong Kong pub boom is gone. Travelling in Lan Kwai Fang could prove he is right, the slugging situation cannot compare with before anymore. Therefore, trying to image that what if there is the darkness everywhere in Hong Kong night? What if all the neon sign would not appear in public area? What Hong Kong is going to look like? And where Hong Kong people will express? Would that just be nostalgia? Or maybe communicate without light and colours?Neon signs is the public light sign apply in various aspects in commerce, art, deign, society. However, in the future, neon signs would be more indoor and individual. Although western designers already stared to create indoor neon art, or just a direction and memorable site in interior design, Hong Kong will approach this accelerating. Especially when the neon signs are regard as nostalgia, Hong Kong people could collect this indoor to keep the memories or give it further abilities. Comparing with Hong Kong and western countries, the field of neon art in the mainland of China is still in an early stage. There are only a few artists and designers work involved this, thus in the future, what would mainland of China is going to be, is it will be next Hong Kong?A fashion student explores in design world with unlimited curiosities.
